My family and I went to Springville and participated in the Polar Bear Plunge.  All the major local news networks were there - CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX.  I got a little air time on Ch 2.  It wasn't really exercise, but I did swim about 10 yards - better than a goose egg for the day.

I went out at lunch time for a bike ride, but it was really cold.  My thermometer only said about 34 degrees, I was hoping for closer to 40.  The wind was blowing out of the canyon and then add my bike speed riding into the wind and I was freezing.  I turned around after about a mile and a half and went back.

I wrapped my calf up for the bike and run and took it just a little slower for the bike and it was fine.  My main problem was that I got into the lake ready for the swim and realized that I had left my goggle over by my bike.  I started to climb out of the water when they started a count-down, 10-9-8...  I got back in the water and swam without goggles, it really threw me off both with swimming and mentally, and probably increased my swim time by a bit.

I only did 4x1200.  I will have to work up beyond there.  It was 88 degrees out.  I was shooting for 5:00 which is my yasso goal pace.  1:40/lap.  I figure if I can work up to about 6-7 1200’s at 5:00 then doing 8-10x800/yassos at 3:20 won’t seem so bad.

Splits:

5:16 - :(  First lap 1:42, second 3:21, it felt like I was slowing a little for the first half of the 3rd, but I tried to pick it up for the second half.  I was surprised by the 5:16.

A friend gave me some "magic" patches to use while running today.  They are from lifewave (http://www.lifewave.com/energyenhancer.asp)  They are suppose to give you more energy and decrease pain and discomfort.  I gave them a try today.

Today's run was followed by a hard speed session yesterday.  I ran my normal 5 mile loop up the canyon.  I did a 1/2 mile interval on the way up and a 1 mile interval on the way back down.  I tried to push the pace a bit.

My normal time is around 42+, today it was 40:55.  My 1/2 mile up was 3:38 and my 1 mile back was 7:34.  Felt pretty good today.

Did the patches work?  It's hard to say at this point, I'll have to give them some additional testing.  My time was about 2 minutes faster and that included a drink, two short walking breaks after the speed sessions and getting delayed shortly by traffic 3 times and running the day after a hard speed session.  I was trying to push the pace, so could I have done the same w/o the patches?  Good questions.  I have a couple more patches that I will try out in the future before making my final judgement.

I have a friend (John) that I normally run with, he was suppose to join me and bring his magic feather, but he had to drop out at the last minute.  Was he really busy?  or was he scared to take his feather up against the patches?

I went to Father-and-Sons campout Friday night.  I dropped off water 4 miles from camp.  Saturday morning I got up early ran to my water and back.  The camp was on the west side of Utah Lake.  There were a ton of mosquitos.  If I would stop running for just a second they would just swarm me.  I would be covered on my legs are arms.  I was swatting them away with my hat.  As long as I was running they didn't seem to land on me - it was good motivation to keep going.

When I got back to camp I jumped in the truck, killed a bunch of mosquitos and then cooled off.  They weren't as bad when I wasn't sweating and breathing hard.

I ran about 12 miles starting at 5 AM with the group before getting to the 5k.  My time was not very good, could have had something to do with the downhill mileage I did on Wednesday and the 12 miles right before the race.  The whole family was there and we all ran, and had a pancake breakfast at the park after.

I started at 4:40 and got a couple of miles in before meeting with the rest of the running group.  I had to be in Provo at 8:00 so I ran as much as I could before heading over there.  It was a good run, but I was getting very exhausted before I quit.  I don't think I could have gone much further.

The Wednesday morning run down payson canyon.  It was a little cool at the start.  I wasn't able to keep up with the faster guys.  I ran with Janie the last 5 miles or so.  She was pushing the pace at the end and I struggled to keep up.  I ran a 7:12 the last mile.

Running MilesSwimming YardsBike Miles

It was a very pathetic run.  I wanted to get 6 since I missed yesterday.  I was trying out a new pair of compression socks that I planned to use in the marathon to help allieviate cramps.  The socks were pushing against my shins and causing shin pain.  I had to walk awhile then finally push the socks down.  I cut it to 3 miles because so many parts were hurting and I have a long run tomorrow.

I ran with the Spanish Fork Running Club.  It started out a little painful.  I was going a little faster than I should have.  My shins were still hurting and my right achilles was acting up.  After 3 miles I slowed it down a bit and things seemed to loosen up.  It was a pretty good run, I started getting really tired toward the end but made my goal of 20.

It was a pretty decent day overall.  A little cloud cover and not to terribly hot.  The first half of the course was downhill and the second half was rolling hills, with no overall gain or loss.  I wanted to be closer to 8 minute pace the first half because I knew the second half would be slower.  I was hoping to break 4 hours, but because of a slow start and then too much walking on the last 6 miles it wasn't to be.

Nice effort on a tough course. I agree, that you really have to attack the time the first half.

My car was at the repair shop (4 miles away) and I decided to run down and get it.  This was my first run after the marathon.  I didn't stretch and after about 1/2 mile I was still feeling sore from the race.  About a mile my hammy/groin muscles felt really tight and started to feel like I could pull a muscle.  I slowed down but kept going.  Today I can barely move my leg - I fear I've pulled a muscle.  I think I was still really tight from the race and took it to fast without stretching or a warm-up.  I'll rest Thursday and Friday and hopefully be able to get in a good run Saturday.

I had a really good 12 miler today.  Most of the group met at 5:30, I didn't know so I showed up at 5.  Carolyn and Ludlow showed up at 5 - they were planning on 18 miles today.  We did about 1.6 miles of warm-up while waiting for others.

The rest showed up at 5:30 (Dan, Hal, Steve, Jill) - planning to go shorter.  I ran with them until about mile 8 or so and then turned around.

On my way back I ran into Mickenzie, Kent and Aubrie? and ran with them for a bit.  I really had to pick up the pace to keep up with them but it felt good to go faster for a bit.

I tried to keep up with John at the beginning but he was just going to fast for me. I started out with Janie, but lost her fairly quickly.  She caught up and passed me around mile 10.  I also caught up with Mark, Ashley and Jill around Mile 12.  Mark and Ashley finally left me behind, but Jill and I kept leap frogging until the end.

The weather was very nice, it started to get a little warm at the end,but a lot better than last year.  I was getting very tired at the end and wanted to stop and walk.  I knew if I stopped and walked I wouldn't get a PR and I pushed on.  I was afraid that my legs would cramp up and I'd be forced to stop.  They started feeling very tight but the cramps held off and I was able to push in the last few miles.

Lori and I attended the 10-year club dinner that night and sat with Todd and Leslie.  I was a very nice dinner, well worth 10 years of running for.

Monday morning my muscles are still very sore - my calves, quads and now my left ankle is hurting.

I am still a ways from a BQ, but I've set the bar very low, so I continue to get PR's about every year and I keep getting older so maybe a BQ is in my future.  I definately think I can do better than 3:43.

I was surprised to see so much snow this morning.  I wasn't expecting any.  I meet the SF group and went 8 miles.  I was icy and slippery for most of the way.  Coming back along tree-lined road it got really windy.  I was blowing and drifting snow across the road.  It was very cold until I got over to River Bottom road, then the wind was mostly at my back.

It was good to get 8 miles in on a day like this.  I ran with Dan, Steve, Hal and ?.
