My family always goes over to Springville and runs the Nestle 5k. But many years it is on the same day as the Salem Spring Triathlon, so I have skipped it to do the triathlon. This year I decided to do them both. The 5k starts at 7:30 AM and the triathlon at 9:00 AM. I got to Salem at 5:50 and started setting up my stuff. I picked up my packet and got my body markings around 6:00. I was wearing my triathlon suit with my tri number and on top of that I had a t-shirt. I left Salem at 6:30 and headed to springville. I already had my number and pinned it to my t-shirt. The 5k started right at 7:30 and I was finished shortly before 8. I grabbed some snacks and started heading out. I found my wife and gave her my bib number for the prize drawing. I got back to Salem around 8:30. I made it for most of the pre-race meeting. My wave didn't start until 9:15 so I had plenty of time to hang out and prepare for the race. I got in the water just before the 9:10 guys left and it was really cold. I did a little swimming to get use to the temperature. It only took about 5 minutes or so and the water didn't feel that bad. When I got out of the water I struggled to get my suit off, luckily some bystander offered to help. The bike seemed a little slow, but I didn't want to cramp up by pushing it to hard. The run also seemed like it was in slow motion. I walked a couple of times for just a minute or so to let my legs rest. My 5k time at Nestle was around 26:30 (I haven't seen the official results.) My 5k time at Salem was 27:27. Which I was OK with, I just wanted to be under 30. My total tri time was 1:30. Not that fast, but acceptable for me.
